Vaccine for swine flu (H1N1) will arrive as early as Tuesday in American hospitals

Vaccine for the H1N1 flu will begin arriving in the nation’s hospitals, clinics and schools as early as Tuesday, the start of an effort to protect Americans against a swine flu virus that emerged this past spring and quickly circled the globe.

Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says the effort ushers in a “challenging few weeks” for health officials.

That’s an understatement.

In a task worthy of a deadly serious video game, state health departments have to organize thousands of workers at 90,000 sites nationwide to administer as many as 250 million doses in three to four months, making sure the people at greatest risk from swine flu — such as pregnant women, young children and health care workers — are first in line.

14 year old girl dies from swine flu in Maryland

A 14-year-old girl from Baltimore City is the state’s ninth death from the swine flu.

Relatives of 14-year-old Destinee Parker tell the Baltimore Sun that the teenager died after being hospitalized last week for both the swine flu and double pneumonia.

Officials of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene confirmed the death, but do not release the teen’s identity.

Officials say the death is the second person under 18 to die from H1N1, and the teen did not have any underlying medical condition.

The girl was an eighth grader at Montebello Elementary/Middle School. The school system last week cleaned the building according to city health department regulations.

The teen’s father told WBAL-TV that he was upset that his daughter was publicly identified.

Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Dr. Andres Alonso confirmed the death in the following statement: ...Read the entire article...

American soldier dead - Swine flu to blame

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A 23-year-old soldier from Florida who was in basic training is the Army’s first death from complications of swine flu, officials said Thursday.

The death at Fort Jackson, the Army’s largest training camp and just outside Columbia, may be the first such loss among the nation’s 1.4 million men and women in uniform.
