Another North Texas teenager has died of H1N1 flu, according to the Dallas County Health and Human Services department.
Tuesday morning at the weekly Dallas County Commissioners’ meeting, health department officials said a 16-year-old Richardson girl died from the virus during the weekend.
CBS 11 News has identified the girl as Lana Trinh.
Trinh was a student at Richardson Berkner High School, and had an unnamed pre-existing medical condition that put her at risk for the H1N1 flu virus, according to the health department. Prior to her death, she had been out of school since September 18. Her absence may have been related to the pre-existing conditio
School district officials would not confirm her identity, but did say that the girl who died was a special education student. According to district officials, she was taught by specialists in what has been called a “self-contained environment.”
“She had significant underlying health issues,” said Richardson Independent School District spokesman Tim Clark. “Her mother said she had flu-like symptoms.”
“It is tragic,” Clark added. “She was very well liked.”
Health department officials also said they are keeping a close eye on the school for any more cases of H1N1. Of the 2700 students on the high school campus, only eight have been absent from school based on flu-like symptoms. The school issued official notification of the teen’s death via automated phone messages to parents.
This is the fifth H1H1 flu death in Dallas County this year.
